1 Corinthians 12.27 — Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

Brand loyalty is low. Four of the top five global companies didn’t exist 40 years ago. Being around for a long time can be seen as a liability with the next generation. Four of Forbes top ten riches men in the world are from the Silicon Valley—there are no women on that list.

It’s interesting to take a look at the different way that loyalty is viewed in our culture. What we are loyal to as a culture changes over time. It is no longer seen as important to be loyal to any institution—marriage, Wal-Mart, Military, the Church, or even education. Now, people are committed to their own individual styles, and to the new institutions that help them express those styles in a personalized way: that’s why almost everyone has a cell phone.

Brand loyalty is still a real force, and there is a contest that operates. The Apple vs. PC battle will probably continue until one is vanquished, just the way that Facebook completely rendered Myspace obsolete. Apple just posted its first ever loss, and I believe it is precisely because the Android and PC worlds offered greater individual user possibilities.

Today, we will receive new members. This is an important part of our culture at Lighthouse. Our Church culture works as a Fellowship of Committed Christian Friends. And that word “Committed” is a big part of who we are. In fact, when I first invited people to become members ten years ago, I got 16 phone calls reprimanding me, and two families left the church! Obviously, Sonoma is a fiercely independent culture.

But we can’t be entirely independent and part of the Body of Christ at the same time. God intended each one of us to play a role in the expression of the Church to the world. And often, that expression requires us to step outside of our private world and share our lives with one another. Friends, that’s not some necessary evil—it’s entirely the point! God’s desire for each of us is the share this journey together as friends.
