Matthew 6:20-21 — But lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor dust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through or steal, 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
We witnessed something on Wednesday night. We got a small glimpse of what happens because Scott and Jen have laid up for themselves treasures in Heaven. We heard numerous young people testify how Scott and Jen invested their lives and gave of themselves to those people. There are so many more who could have also spoken, but couldn’t do so on Wednesday night simply due to lack of time.
People are our treasures. Candidly, the relationships that we form here on earth are the only treasures we get to lay up in heaven. It is both the treasure of Jesus, our Lord and King, and the treasures of other people. The people are those who have invested in us and those who come to know Him because we took the time to invest in them. Our treasures are the family of God, the body of Christ.
When we love people, we don’t want them to suffer for eternity. We want to see them live abundantly, beginning here on earth. We invest in them. We spend time with them. We give to them. We teach them to glorify God first, as Jesus said, “to observe all things, whatsoever I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:20) It’s what Jesus both taught and did. It is His “Great Commission” to us. Scott and Jen do this.
It always costs us something to invest in people. It may be a place to live, or time, or money, or food, or all of those physical things. It may even cost us our lives. It cost Jesus His. He was willing to lay down His life for His friends. There was and is no greater love.
In order to invest in someone, we must have something to give. Spiritually, it’s called “faith.” God gives us faith. When we invest it in someone else, He gives us more. Don’t you want to make a difference in that way? It is such a wonderful reward when someone says, “I want to know the Man that you know and ask Him into my life.”
Please be someone who makes a difference in someone else’s life. Be blessed this week as you lay up your treasures in heaven – people!
